Nominated for two News and Documentary Emmy Awards, Marta Cunningham is a seasoned artist who has earned her place in this industry.
A native of Northern California, she was so moved by the story of Lawrence King's tragic murder in 2008 that she embedded herself in the beachside city of Oxnard, CA and soon began filming the community whose lives were touched by the tragedy. The result was Valentine Road, a feature length documentary that competed in the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and sold to HBO. "Valentine Road" has traveled to more than two hundred festivals, accruing thirteen awards, including Emmy nominations.
Marta recently directed and co-executive produced the pilot and second episode of the AMC limited series 61st STREET, being nominated for NAACP Image Award for her directing. She also executive produced and directed all six episodes of CHIVALRY for Channel 4 in the UK, which was created and starred Steve Coogan. She has now directed forty episodes of television and streaming since 2016. Additional series directing credits include GENIUS, MLK/X, INSECURE, ROOM 104, DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, among others. For her directing on the hit series, TRANSPARENT, she was also nominated twice for NAACP Image Awards. This year Marta directed two episodes of the critically acclaimed hit Amazon series WHEEL OF TIME. Working on three different continents for production.
Cunningham is now developing several pilots, documentaries, and narrative feature films with her new production company-Queen B Pictures.
